Hyaluronic acid allows the increase of soft tissue volume and in particular the filling of wrinkles.
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the dermis. As we age, the quality of this acid deteriorates and its quantity decreases, leading to an alteration of the dermis. Hyaluronic acid promotes the reconstitution of tissues. It is naturally present in our organism, it serves to maintain a good level of hydration of the skin by capturing water and maintaining it in the deep layers.
Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in various tissues of the human body, such as the skin and cartilage. It is therefore suitable for biomedical applications targeting these tissues. The first biomedical product based on hyaluronic acid, Healon, was developed in the 1970s and approved for use in ophthalmic surgery such as corneal transplants, cataract, glaucoma, etc.). It is also used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee. Such treatments are administered in the form of injections such as Ostenil (TRB Chemedica) into the knee joint to increase the viscosity of the synovial fluid and thus lubricate the joint.
It has been used in aesthetic medicine as a wrinkle filler for many years. Hyaluronic acid-based products such as Restylane or Surgiderm are used by doctors rather than collagen, because hyaluronic acid reduces the risk of allergies and its effects last longer (6 to 12 months). Additionally, it has the property of being resorbable, so it helps avoid permanent accidents.
