To fully understand peeling, here are a few points to remember before taking the plunge.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA), derived from vinegar acid, is non-toxic and does not cause allergies. Its application, however, can be unpleasant, causing a sensation of heat and sometimes burning.
Here again, the concentration depends on the depth of the peel: the higher the TCA content of the applied gel, the more layers of skin are removed, the deeper the peeling.
Phenic acid, or phenol, is a poison derived from benzene. It is only used for the deepest peelings, performed under anesthesia and cardiac monitoring, with heavy postoperative effects.
The concentration of acids determines the power of a peel but also its risks: the mixture applied in the office is much more concentrated than that of a home peeling. Many commercial products do not indicate their dosage, rarely exceeding 10 to 15%, compared to 30 to 70% with a product used in the office. As for homemade recipes, their concentration is impossible to estimate for a non-professional!
The peeling is really advised for the skins which miss brightness, like asphyxiated, presenting imperfections, fine lines, dehydration but also sun spots. The peeling is also an anti-aging procedure since it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, putting the skin back under tension.
One week after the first session, the complexion is clearer, the skin smoother and tighter, and the spots have faded. Results continue to improve over the next six weeks, but multiple sessions are required depending on the desired results.
